Borderland, Denmark's Burning Man event

For a week the border between Dream and Reality is explored at the Borderland Event, near Copenhagen.

Borderland, Denmark's Burning Man event

This cultural event was held last July, from 22 to 28 to be precise, in Hedeland park not far from Copenhagen, belonging to the municipality of Hedehusene in Denmark, in the wonderful Danish countryside near a pristine lake characterized by a handful of tiny islets present within it.

A small introduction before starting to explain what it is Borderland is necessary: first of all it is important to underline that This is not a Festival, if you first of all as a participant don't put yourself directly into the game and don't bring entertainment this won't be there, if you personally don't participate in the creation process there will be nothing. In fact it is not even possible to buy tickets for this Event, but only virtual membership cards that allow you to participate as a member of the Borderland Cultural Association, it is possible to do this from place or from the Membership facebook group.

It is a “Event Burn” as there are so many around the world inspired by the original Burning Man US, co-created by all its participants/members where the spirit of participation and shared creation together with respect and responsibility are the pillars. Borderland is a safe space co-regulated by its members and participants, for this reason the photos are allowed with due restrictions, it is possible to photograph people up close only with their prior authorization, it is a must to ask.

This co-created cultural event literally stands as one for the participants Bubble halfway between Dream and Reality where everyone is free to express himself/herself outside the behavioral social constraints imposed by Modern Society, without any prejudice or mockery towards any type of clothing or costume. It is a relief valve, an escape from the gray daily routine, many participants friendly called "Burners" or "Borderlings" live this experience as something absolutely necessary and liberating, cathartic for their lives.

It is in fact a truly over the top event, once you cross the "Edge" of the Borderland bubble everything will be different during that week. Casual approaches and conversation starters with strangers, greeting complete strangers warmly when you pass by, this is the norm in Borderland. (This is also underlined by the Guidelines of the Event, the importance of being friendly and sociable with strangers).

The only way to trade any type of property within the Borderland is through the act of giving without expecting to receive anything in return, this is also reflected in the bars or refreshment points (if set up by some members) where it will be possible to get some free snacks or drinks (but obviously without selfishly exaggerating). For this reason, the use of a personal mug is fundamental, a very important element in Borderland etiquette. The cup is the first point from which you will be able to receive gifts in this Bubble between Dream and Reality, it is therefore strongly recommended to bring it, better if it can be attached to the belt.

What is indicated by the Guidelines is to be 100% oneself in constant respect for one's person and for the people around us, to be responsible and self-sufficient, or rather to bring everything that could be useful in this week of "Dream" , it is recommended to organize yourself in campsites where the members take turns cooking, getting water, and fixing an electrical strip, also in this case it is possible to do it through a facebook group. The only real rule is the Leave No Trace imperative once off the site, no rubbish left on the ground will be tolerated in any way.

To co-create it is possible to show up at the event and see if someone needs a hand, for example by going to the "Clown Police" (goliardic Borderland order service), to the "Sanctuary" (first aid tent), or at the "Port" (welcoming gates) but it is warmly It is recommended to use the Borderland platform to kick off any type of cultural activity (music, theatre, dance or other), or provide your participation in a project that has already started. For example use the interface “Dreams” as far as the entertainment offer is concerned, and instead to take care of the organization of what is necessary for the practical realization of the Event, it is good to go to the interface “realities".

If it seems complicated to you, don't worry about your judgment, because it really is. But in summary everything you read in this article is finely explained on the Borderland website, even with the section First-timers dedicated to all those who go there for the first time and are considered "virgins in Borderling jargon". On this page you will be explained how to participate, what to bring with you, how to find the place and generally the spirit of Borderland. You will even be warned about the flora and fauna of the place, because yes, the Danish countryside, despite being beautiful, has two problems: ticks in the tall grass and stinging yellow flowers.

The highlight of every Burn Event is of course the “Burning Ceremony” which usually takes place at the end, last year Borderland did not have any fire ceremony due to the extreme summer drought and the consequent Danish ban on lighting fires, fortunately for the 2019 edition this occurred. The base of a piano played by a pianist covered in a hazmat suit was set on fire, well these continued to play until the flames really started to flare up devouring the piano. Playing a last note, the pianist moved away decreeing the fulfillment of the ritual.

This incredible Event where the Border between Dream and Reality is truly blurred, is recommended to all creatives who dare to cross it.
