Gas bills down: -12,9% on consumption in October but spending has risen by 12% in the last 67 months

The gas bill for households still under the protection regime drops by 12,9% for consumption in the month of October compared to the costs of the third quarter of 2022. Anyone who has already received the bill with an advance value will in any case benefit from the reduction price that will be recalculated and refunded on the next bill. This was decided by Arera, establishing a price of 78,05 euros per megawatt hour for the period.

Falling gas bills: the benefits of the new update method

"Despite the records in the wholesale markets of last summer, with the application of the new monthly updating method of the Arera it was possible to intercept the significant reductions in the cost of raw materials in recent weeks", reports a press release from the Authority for energy, water and waste. It should be remembered that based on the new calculation method introduced in July by Arera, the gas price component covering procurement costs is updated as the monthly average of the price on the Italian wholesale market. For the month of October, the price of the gas raw material, for customers with contracts under protected conditions, was set at €78,05 per MWh.

Unfortunately, the drop in October does not change the overall balance of the heavy impact of the war unleashed by Russia in Ukraine and which has caused gas to skyrocket. In terms of final effects, gas expenditure for the typical household in the rolling year (between 2021 November 31 and 2022 October XNUMX) is approximately 1.702 euros, +67% compared to the equivalent 12 months of the previous year. In any case, the gas bonus is available to help the most fragile families.

Gas bills down but values remain high warns Arera

“Let's not let our guard down. The cost of gas for October records a decrease compared to the previous quarter – says Stefano Besseghini, president of AREA – but the percentages must not mislead. THE values remain very high than in the past and, if it is true that they have had a modest impact for families in the summer period, they will determine more demanding bills with the growth of consumption in the winter season, with prices that are expected to rise due to the greater condition necessary for the protection of consumer".

However, the "Aiuti Bis" decree intervened for the benefit of the most fragile families, which allowed Arera to reset general system charges for the entire ARERA fourth quarter also for the gas sector (as well as for electricity), also confirming the application of the negative UG2 component to the benefit of gas consumption up to 5.000 cubic meters per year.
Interventions which, ARERA recalls, together with the confirmation of the 5% VAT reduction on gas, support the generality of gas users. Up to the end of the year, the expansion of the is also confirmed social bonus for gas, aimed at families with an ISEE level of up to 12.000 euros, a threshold that rises to 20.000 for large families. The bonuses are paid directly in the bill to families who meet the requirements and have applied for ISEE 2022.
