Bnl, Abete leaves: for the first time a female CEO in a large bank

Two big news coming for Bnl, the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro which today is an integral part of the French giant Bnp Paribas. After 22 years Luigi Abete, former president of Confindustria, leaves the presidency and for the first time the bank opens the control room to a woman: Elena Patrizia Goitini, 52 years old, Milanese and Bocconian, is the first woman to become CEO of a large bank. in Italy so far in the bank women had reached the presidency with Patrizia Grieco at Monte dei Paschi di Siena and previously with Letizia Moratti at Ubi, but none has ever been CEO or general manager. Luckily there is always a first time.

To pave the way for Goitini is the move of Andrea Munari, 58, who from CEO becomes president in place of Abete, 73 years old, in office since '98, who had the merit of managing the privatization of the bank, of repelling the onslaught of the crafty people of the neighborhood and of leading the BNL to merge with the French, representing its Italian identity.

"Without women at the helm we waste too many talents" declared two months to Corriere della Sera Munari, who was one of the main protagonists of the pink turning point that crowned Goitini, joined BNL only in 2019 as head of private banking and wealth management after having held managerial roles in Unicredit.

The appointments will be formalized in the budget assembly in April but the depth of the turnaround is already evident. A new course is really beginning for BNL, unthinkable until a few years ago.
