Big Science, a 10 billion euro market in the EU: Italy emerges, here's how

THEItalian industry is emerging as protagonist in Big Science, a sector that focuses on large scientific and technological projects, often funded and promoted internationally. Italian companies, large and small, are demonstrating competence, innovation and technological capabilities advanced, winning important contracts with European research centers, contributing to the development of innovative projects, particularly in the field of nuclear fusion, such as the Iter project. These partnerships strengthen Italy's position at the international level and stimulate national technological development, thanks also to the contribution of Italian SMEs, which offer innovative and specialized solutions.

The Big Science sector has thus become one of the spearheads of Italian industry, allowing the country's companies to stand out on a global scale. The meeting “Big Science Italy“, held yesterday in Turin, shed light on the crucial role of Italian companies in high-profile international scientific projects.

The Turin meeting: Big Science Italia

The meeting, organized in Turin in collaboration with Confindustria, Turin Industrial Union, Confindustria Piedmont, Confindustria Friuli Venezia Giulia , Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, was a preview of the Big Science Business Forum 2024 of Trieste. It brought together some of the major exponents of the Italian industry operating in the Big Science sector, with the aim of highlighting Italian entrepreneurial excellence and strengthening cooperation between industry and research centers.

The event was attended by industry experts, including Paul Acunzo di Aeneas, Director of Bsbf 2024, and important figures from the business world such as Dario Galbiati di Ansaldo Nuclear e John Grasso di Asg Superconductor. Two round tables explored the successes of Italian companies in Big Science and future prospects for the sector.

During the event, the ways in which Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with their flexibility and capacity for innovation, are playing an essential role in large international scientific projects were discussed. A specific focus was dedicated to the value of the Italian industrial supply chain in the development of nuclear energy, with the intervention of Aurelius Queen, energy delegate of Confindustria, and the testimony of Stephen Good, CEO and founder of newcleo.

Big Science Business Forum 2024: Trieste prepares to host the event

Il Big Science Business Forum 2024 (BSBF 2024), now in its third edition, will be held in Trieste from 1 to 4 October 2024. This international event is the landmark for companies involved in the big science and the major European scientific organizations. The previous editions, held in Copenhagen e Granada, have demonstrated the potential of this forum to connect industry and science, promoting collaborations and business opportunities.

The Bsbf 2024 is promoted by the top ten Big science organizations (Bsos) European, including:

  • CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research)
  • ESA (European Space Agency)
  • ESO (European Southern Observatory)
  • ESS (European Spallation Neutron Source)
  • European XFEL (European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility)
  • SKAO (Square Kilometer Array Observatory)

These organizations manage advanced research projects in fields such as nuclear fusion, astrophysics, particle physics, and other cutting-edge technologies.

Every year, the Big Science sector generates a market of around 10 billion euros in Europe. These funds are distributed through international tenders managed by the Bsos. The Bsbf 2024 will offer the opportunity for Italian and European companies to deepen the methods of participation in these tenders, expanding their business prospects.

The event is expected to be attended by approximately 1.000 delegates from 500 organizations from around the world. They will be set up 150 exhibition stands and 14 national pavilions. In addition to Italy, countries such as Germany, UK, China, Finland e PortugalThe event will culminate with visits to important research centers in the Trieste region and beyond, offering a unique opportunity for networking between science and industry.
