Bettini, the wind vane of the Democratic Party: for or against Calenda every other day

Within a few hours, the alleged guru of the Democratic Party, Goffredo Bettini, but also his party mates Orlando and Boccia, went from denigrating Carlo Calenda to courting him in view of Sunday's ballot for the Capitol, but it is highly doubtful that the voters appreciate these acrobatic about-faces.

Bettini, the wind vane of the Democratic Party: for or against Calenda every other day

Too comfortable for the Roman Democratic Party celebrate Carlo Calenda today to magnetize his vote after denigrating him as an exponent of the right when Minister Giorgetti, desperate for the unsustainability of the centre-right candidates in Rome and Milan, surprisingly endorsed him on the eve of the first round of local elections. In this operation of gullibility, which has all the appearances of an undignified political about-face, Goffredo Bettini once again distinguished himself, whom some persist in defining as the guru of the Democratic Party even if he has never got one right, not even by mistake, but which would be much better classified as the wind vane of the Democratic Party, given that its orientations fluctuate dramatically according to the most contingent conveniences. The ups and downs of his thoughts were pilloried the other day by an acute reader of the newspaper, the former CGIL trade unionist Michele Magno, who limited himself to comparing Bettini's opposing statements at a distance of only one week. What can I say: volatility of thought.

On September 29, the ineffable Bettini, in a statement at the Festival delle Città, stated: “Throughout the electoral campaign Calenda tried to pick a fight with me. I never answered him. Not to advertise it. He today he returns to offend with a video. These are his last gasps. But I invite my friends and my friends, who have followed me in my battles on Rome and who respect me, not to vote for him. Also because everything will be over for him on Sunday”. But, with one somersault worthy of an Olympic medal if he didn't reveal all the political paucity, here's what Bettini instead declared to Corriere della Sera on 7 October: “For Calenda there was an important and very clear success. Calenda is speaking. There is a potentially positive climate”. In short, the ballot for the Capitol is coming and then long live Calenda.

It takes a big face, but Calenda is a man of the world and of characters like Bettini – but also like Orlando and Boccia who in a few hours have shamelessly gone from denigration to courting the leader of Action – is right not to worry. And in fact he had no difficulty in expressing his personal appreciation for the mayoral candidate of the Democratic Party in Rome, Roberto Gualtieri. A big coup for the former Economy Minister, who in the last few hours has also received the endorsement of Matteo Renzi and Emma Bonino and who sees the Campidoglio finish line ever closer, but be careful: if he really wants to confiscate the votes of all the liberal democratic area of Rome – where Calenda in primis stood out but also the candidates of Italia Viva, who were among the most voted on his list – do not listen to the litanies of Bettini and his companions: in addition to being very undignified, of they usually lead astray.
