Bernabè at Bocconi: "Large social networks can be a risk to democracy"

A meeting, the one at the Bocconi University in Milan, to talk about the future of the Internet, but with an eye to the present of Telecom Italia. The executive chairman of Telecom Italia Franco Bernabé, in the Milanese university for a debate on his latest book “Supervised freedom. Privacy, security and the Internet market”, did not fail to answer the questions of some reporters regarding the hypothesis of spin-off of the fixed network, the acquisition of the Brazilian Gvt and in particular the offer by Naguib Sawiris for a stake in the group's capital . “We make the decisions, there will be a broad debate, I think very conclusive,” said Bernabé, postponing everything to the next board of directors scheduled for December 6: "We will certainly make decisions".

First, however, the president of Telecom Italia and author of the book on privacy on the web, spoke in debate on how to "Rethink the Internet", focusing once again on the issue of social networks, recently addressed in the press: "I wonder how much the power of social networks will be able to determine political choices and how compatible this is with democracy". According to Telecom's number one, regulation of the market, privacy and security of the Internet is necessary, a bit like what happened for telecommunications companies which, thanks to the right cocktail of liberalization and regulation, has brought innumerable advantages for users.

“Instead, I notice that internet companies, the so-called 'over the top', such as Amazon, Google or Facebook are practically monopolists”, added Bernabè. “Facebook has a billion users and 400 billion photos and this objectively allows excessive intrusiveness in people's personal lives. In Europe, privacy is protected very strongly, while in the United States this is not the case."

“Another sensitive issue is that of security – finally admonished the president of Telecom Italia -, a topic that must be tackled starting from the architecture of the internet. And this must be done before it becomes a danger to democracy: many, especially young people, do not realize this. They believe that the world is now totally pacified. They don't realize, for example, that Germany gave rise to Nazism in the 30s and that at the time it took two years to find Jews. Today this can be done with a click”.
