Berlusconi promises Napolitano to resign after approval of the stability law

Berlusconi promises Napolitano to resign after approval of the stability law

The state account was approved, above all thanks to the presence in the hall of opposition deputies who did not vote for it. This is because the "majority" supports the Berlusconi government stopped at 308 (316 is the majority of the plenum) against 1 abstention and 321 non-participants in the vote. At that point the prime minister went up to the Quirinale to represent the situation that had arisen to Napolitano, but not necessarily to resign. he will do it after the approval of the stability law.

In short: in the same vote a fundamental document was approved for the institutional stability of the country, and the fact was highlighted that Berlusconi can no longer count on the majority in the Chamber. At this point the Prime Minister could not help but go to the Quirinale to see the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano. An invitation to this effect had been addressed to him by Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa.

The fact that the report was approved did not place the Government under any inescapable constitutional obligation. There was however an obvious political problem. The majority in the House is gone. And not for a road accident. Considering that the call to arms of the parliamentarians of the majority had gone so far as to bring back also the Minister of the Economy Tremonti (who thus did not participate in the Ecofin) and to commit the Prime Minister himself in a frantic attempt (failed) recovery of dissidents. There is therefore a real political boulder before Berlusconi. Particularly serious if we take into account the dramatic situation in which our country finds itself, by now almost under the control of EU and Monetary Fund missions.

The path of resignation should therefore be the first option. Berlusconi immediately took it into consideration if what is circulating among the well-informed of Montecitorio is true. In the hands of the prime minister a leaflet was seen in which 3 points were distinguished: I acknowledge, I resign, President of the Republic. Beyond what might seem like just gossip, it's hard to think that the hypothesis of resignation isn't taken into consideration in a conversation between a prime minister without a majority and the head of state. Given then that Bersani explicitly asked for his resignation in the classroom and that the same iron ally Umberto Bossi invited the premier to step back to favor the formation of an Alfano government. Napolitano did the rest, urging Berlusconi to draw the consequences of the loss of his majority.
Especially since Bossi had also invited Berlusconi to step aside.
After the resignation, the consultations of the Quirinale for the formation, if the conditions are right, of a new Government. In Montecitorio there were rumors of a possible compromise for the birth of an Executive based on the Mario Monte-Gianni Letta axis. We will see.
