Berlusconi: I resign in 15 days, elections in February. Then Alfano premier, I'm not running again

Silvio Berlusconi acknowledged that, after yesterday's vote in the Chamber, the government (still at 308) no longer has a majority and so he went to the Quirinale to announce his resignation to the head of state, which however will become operational after the approval of the stability law, on which the famous maxi-amendment should be presented today, which, in turn, should implement the measures announced in the letter of intent and the additional ones, again requested of us by the EU in a new letter dated 4 November last.

At that point, the President of the Republic Napolitano will open the consultations "giving the utmost attention to the positions and proposals of each political force, that of the majority resulting from the 2008 elections as well as those of the opposition". The oppositions are intent on facilitating an acceleration of the times for the approval of the stability law, while not giving up on asserting their positions in this regard. As for the head of state, Napolitano will ensure that there are no delaying maneuvers by the former majority and the government. The maxi-amendment should be presented today in the Senate, and Berlusconi's resignation should be operational within a fortnight.

In an interview with the director of the press, Mario Calabresi, Berlusconi said he will not stand for re-election in the next elections which, in his opinion, should be brought forward, thus paving the way for the candidacy of Angelino Alfano. In fact, the premier, who, after the conversation at the Quirinale, met with his followers and the League at Palazzo Grazioli, has already said that, even if the President of the Republic decides in the end, there are no alternatives to early elections. because it is "unthinkable" that there could be a majority other than that indicated by the elections. These statements were immediately stigmatized by Bersani who considered them an invasion of the exclusive prerogatives of the President of the Republic. As can be seen, the political situation remains confused, even if the vote in the Chamber and Berlusconi's resignation, albeit deferred by a fortnight to approve the stability law, remain a firm point. But the fact that, even after yesterday's vote, the spread with German bonds has started to fly again, reaching 500, certainly does not bode well.

Berlusconi was very disappointed with the result of the vote in the courtroom, he once again evoked betrayal. And he certainly did not expect that the majority would disappear, so much so that yesterday he had rejected the invitation of Lega leader Umberto Bossi to step aside to favor the formation of an Alfano government. As for the oppositions, after the satisfaction with the result of the Chamber, a prudent attitude was chosen to favor the climate in which the stability law should be rapidly approved.
