Berlin: "It was Draghi who called Merkel"

"I can confirm that there was a telephone conversation, as there are from time to time" between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and ECB president Mario Draghi, but the reconstructions of the press on the contents of the phone call “they have nothing to do with facts and reality”. This was stated by the spokesman for the German leader, Steffen Seibert, specifying that "it was Draghi who called the chancellor".

Yesterday the weekly Der Spiegel wrote that Merkel had complained to Draghi, asking him for some setback in the Central Bank's positions on rigor in the management of public finances.

Previously denials of these reconstructions had also come from an ECB spokesman. Meanwhile, today Draghi travels to Paris to meet French President François Hollande, with whom he will discuss the economic situation in the euro area.
