Gas stations threaten to stop: freight transport at risk

First the motorways, then junctions and ring roads and finally the ordinary road network. This is the program drawn up by unions of petrol stations which with a peremptory note announced the closure of the plants from tomorrow, March 25th.

”The fuel supply systems will begin to close: from Wednesday night those of the motorway network, including junctions and ring roads; and, gradually, all the others also along the ordinary road network” communicate Faib-Fegica-Figisc/Anisa in a note. "We, alone, we are no longer in a position to ensure either the necessary level of health safety or the economic sustainability of the service”, explain the fuel managers.

At the basis of the decision there is a deep discontent due to the fact that they have been "forgotten" by the Government: "In a country which, despite the structural limitations and the absolute drama of the situation, seeks and often finds a way to trigger mechanisms of solidarity, there is a category of people, over 100.000 throughout Italy, who, without any mention, has so far ensured, without any support either of an economic nature or with adequate medical equipment, the essential public service of energy distribution and fuel for the transport of goods and people. 100.000 people who continued to do their job (reduced by an average of 85%) at the risk of their own safety and endangering their health, physically supervising the area, remaining where they have always been and where every citizen of this country is used to to find them every day, that is to say in the middle of the street”, they write in the note.

The consequences of this choice could be very heavy for the entire country. Because if it's true that ordinary citizens subject to government restrictions remain locked up at home without using the car, it's equally true that without petrol goods will not be able to circulate, putting essential services at risk – from supermarkets to pharmacies – guaranteed up to now.

Precisely for this reason, Paolo Uggè vice president of Confcommercio and Conftrasporto, Paolo Uggè invites the Government to provide answers to the requests of the managers of the motorway and road fuel systems. It is necessary to avoid that road haulage is forced, against its will, to stop due to the impossibility of refueling by interrupting the supply of goods.

“We hope for an immediate intervention by the Government because, if the initials of the fuel managers were to confirm the shutdown, announced starting tomorrow, it would have the effect the risk of the consequent suspension of already precarious essential services that today the road haulage companies are guaranteeing to hospitals, pharmacies, production activities and shops selling basic necessities”, concludes the vice president of Conftrasporto-Confcommercio.
