Bentivogli (Fim-Cisl) on former Alcoa: no more postponements

"Two years of postponements are unsustainable, now clear words and if Glencore withdraws, immediately reopen to new investors": this is what the general secretary of the metalworkers of the CISL Marco Bentivogli maintains, who took stock of the open dispute

Bentivogli (Fim-Cisl) on former Alcoa: no more postponements

Minister Carlo Calenda provided a report of the last few weeks in which the MiSE and the Presidency of the Council worked to ensure that the request for Glencore 25 mw/h was approved within a new scheme with energy authorization by Brussels, to this was added availability for a development and investment contract with Invitalia.

The new scheme verified with the Energy Authority and the Commission brings the price of energy to €25,7 MW/h. On this basis, several technical meetings were held upon request from Glencore on the new scheme and the need to be certified by Brussels. MiSE requested a comfort letter from Brussels which arrived very quickly. Enel's availability also arrived at the end of the meeting with Daniel Goldberg.

Statement by the FIM Cisl General Secretary Marco Bentivogli:
“The Minister requested due diligence to be carried out by the summer to confirm his willingness to take over, but Glencore did not respond positively and made further requests: legislation guaranteed for 10 years and, if not, compensation paid by Enel plus guarantees whatever happens the fare does not change. The Minister confirmed to us that Glencore made these requests knowing that they were impracticable because all this would be an infringement and a sanction by Europe.

How does the Government also give guarantees for future Governments, not only that, this guarantee would be assessed by the EU as a serious infringement which would have negative effects not only on the dispute but on all heavy industry.

This morning Enel presented a written document specifying that it is impossible to take on the risk of a 10-year armored tariff and that this does not happen in any European country.

The Minister believes that this response from Glencore cannot wait any longer, within this seventh telephone appointment with Ivan Glasemberg CEO Glencore so that he assumes responsibility for giving a definitive answer. Furthermore, energy cost conditions are believed to be very good today for other potential investors. The MiSE will immediately present a presentation of the conditions and at the end of August it will start some "calls" to potential investors. Furthermore, the Minister urged the Region of Sardinia to apply for the granting of the status of "complex crisis area". The next meeting has been set for the first week of September.

In the meantime, the issue of shock absorbers is increasingly dramatic for us, commented Bentivogli: "we cannot throw in the towel for a decisive dispute but at the same time we must work for real solutions, giving greater transparency to the transfer hypotheses, as in this last phase we seem to find. The workers” concludes Bentivogli: “need concrete hopes but based on true information, in these years of exclusive negotiations with Glencore too many have felt authorized to make fun of the workers of Sulcis”.
