Beko Europe announces 1.935 redundancies and three plant closures in 2025. Unions: “Brutal plan, government must exercise golden power immediately”

Closure within end of 2025 of the establishments Beko Europe di Siena e commonality (Ascoli Piceno) and the cold line at Cassinetta (Varese). There will be 1.935 redundancies in total. This is what was communicated, according to what has been learned, by the top management of the ex Whirlpool al ministerial round table held on Wednesday 20 November in Rome, at Mimit, in the presence of the unions. The closures and redundancies would be foreseen in the plan for Italy communicated by the Turkish multinational, an announcement that comes after 12 years of redundancy pay between former Whirlpool and Beko Europe.

Beko, the government's response

"We do not share and cannot accept the plan presented today by the top management of Beko Europe. We will enforce the golden power, which for us means protecting employment". This is what the undersecretary said Fausta Bergamot after the plan illustrated at the table at Mimit by the Beko Europe group, born from the acquisition of Whirlpool Europe by Turkish Arçelik. “We will not accept conclusions that are not shared” with the unions”, “we will take every possible action to ensure that the property change strategy and, if necessary, we will also resort to the reference shareholder” to “request respect for the interests of our country”.

Beko, unions: “Brutal plan”

Beko's is a "brutal industrial planwhich provides closures and layoffs“. This is what we read in a note from Fim, Fiom, Uilm, Uglm national in which the intervention of the executive is requested: “In light of this, the Government must immediately exercise that golden power that in recent months it boasted of having inserted to protect workers in the phase of the sale of Whirlpool Emea to Beko and whose function in terms of deterrence against layoffs is not clear. Now is the time to move on to action, to avert a socially brutal plan and the attempt to industrial plunder by Beko“. The union immediately declares a state of mobilization in all factories”. The meeting is reconvened for the day 10 December at 14.

Beko, here's what the group says: "Concrete solution"

The industrial plan for Italian activities presented today represents "a concrete solution which will allow a stable and long-term presence in Italy, thanks to a structure that reflects the changed conditions of the global market, the difficult competitive scenario to which the sector is subjected in Europe". This is stated a note from Beko Europe in which the company specifies that "overall, investments in new products and in the innovation of production processes, through robotics, automation of internal logistics and digitalisation, amount to over 110 million euro“. The plan also includes redundancies relating to the production units affected by Cassinetta, Siena and Comunanza equal to 1.151 units and redundancies in the clerical and managerial area equal to 678 units.

Beko, the political alarm

The rumours that speak of 1.935 redundancies indicated by Beko's industrial plan in Italy are alarming the Marche MP of the Democratic Party, Irene Manzi. “The indiscretion comes from union sources during the work of the table at the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy where it is Minister Adolfo Urso was culpably absent“, attacks the parliamentarian.

The plan of the former Whirlpool, he continues, "also includes the closure of the Comunanza (Ascoli Piceno) plants by 2025, in addition to those in Siena and the cold line in Cassinetta" (Milan). For Manzi, this is "a very serious decision that requires the government to do its part until the end in the negotiations to prevent this employment and production disaster. At this point we want to understand if it will be effective golden power. It is necessary for the executive to clarify the situation as soon as possible”, concludes the Democratic MP.
