Bekaert, Fim Cisl: layoffs suspended for a month

"We managed to prevent the dismissal letters from being sent out for the 4 employees on 318 September": expresses moderate satisfaction secretaryio national Fim Cisl Ferdinando Uliano, in commenting on the story of the workers of the Bekaert factory in Figline Valdarno, near Florence. In August, the Belgian company's factory is closed for holidays, but the workers are spending their holidays guarding the gates until the end of the month, to keep attention focused on a still very delicate situation.

“The one-month suspension was not taken for granted – Uliano added in a note -: the company had also refused the request for suspension before Minister Di Maio. Now, however, in the regional office, thanks to the initiatives of the workers and our pressure, he has accepted the request for extend the discussion phase with the trade union organizations until 3 October 2018, thus preventing 4 layoffs on September 318th”.

The problems remain, the dispute is difficult and very complicated due to the significant impact on employment and why the company has not changed its position and is determined to stick to her own stance. “For us – said the national secretary of the metalworkers of the CISL – it was essential to get rid of the layoffs in August and have more time to explore all the useful possibilities to find positive solutions for the 318 workers of Bekaert. The company cannot think of unloading the effects of its choices on the workers, it must open a real confrontation with the union and assume all social responsibilities towards the workers and towards the territory”.
