ECB, Asmussen: "Cyprus systemic importance"

Cyprus has 'systemic importance'. He said it Joerg Asmussen, member of the Executive Committee of the ECB, on the sidelines of a conference in Berlin, pointing out i risks of contagion than from Cyprus they can radiate to other countries, Greece above all.

"Disordered developments of the crisis can have negative consequences in other countries", continued Asmussen, arguing that the risk is to send negative signals "to countries that are about to exit their adjustment programs such as Ireland".

Asmussen did not rule out the possibility of an improvement in the conditions for small savers within the framework of the aid plan launched on Saturday in Brussels, provided that the country's final contribution (equal to 5,8 billion) remains unchanged.

“This is the adjustment program decided by the Cypriot government, not by the Troika or any other government – concluded Asmussen -. If the country wants to somehow change the forced levy on deposits, it is within its power. The Government will only have to ensure that the total funding remains unchanged”.
