Bayer confirms offer for Monsanto, stock down

According to estimates by the Reuters agency, the merger between the German pharmaceutical group and the leading US biotechnology company would give rise to a group with a turnover of approximately 60 billion euros.

The German pharmaceutical chemical group Bayer confirmed that he has started dei talks with the US biotechnology group Monsanto for a possible merger. The Leverkusen company itself writes it in a press release, while Monsanto has confirmed that it has received a non-binding and unsolicited offer from the German giant.

"The proposed combination - reads the note - would strengthen Bayer with leadership positions in the core business sectors and would give birth to a leading group in the agri-food business", i.e. according to estimates by the Reuters agency, a group worth around 60 billion euros of turnover. Again according to the agency, it would be an even greater deal than the one that took place in February which it saw ChemChina to acquire Syngenta for 43 billions of dollars.

On the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Bayer stock opens at -5% after confirmation of the offer for Monsanto.
