Barroso-Van Rompuy: "We will support Tobin Tax at the G20"

“We will actively support the Tobin Tax”, the tax on financial transactions that Brussels intends to launch in Europe. This was assured by José Manuel Barroso and Herman Van Rompuy, respectively president of the European Commission and president of the EU Council, in a letter addressed to the leaders of the 27 countries of the Union in view of the G20 scheduled in Cannes in less than a month.

“We are convinced – continue Barroso and Van Rompuy – that the adoption of similar measures by the G20 partners will be able to help us all to face global challenges”. The European partners of the G20, observe the EU leaders, “have the impression that, if Europe does not resolve the sovereign debt crisis currently affecting it, the world economy will suffer serious repercussions.

It is up to us to demonstrate that the EU is determined to do whatever it takes to overcome the current difficulties”. In this sense, the postponement of the European Council from 17 to 23 October was decided to allow "to finalize the overall strategy on the sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone - explains Van Rompuy in a statement - a strategy that includes a series of correlated aspects ”.
