Barroso: the situation in the eurozone is "very serious"

Bad omens come from Brussels. The president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso described the situation in the eurozone as "extremely serious" due to the debt crisis, adding that the consequences of a possible failure of tomorrow's extraordinary summit would be felt "throughout Europe and beyond".

In the daily press conference of the EU executive, Barroso asked European leaders to respect the commitments undertaken to guarantee the stability of the euro, asking everyone to "show the ethics of European responsibility". Even from Paris they let it be known that they want to find a "lasting response" to the Greek situation as of tomorrow. President Nicolas Sarkozy will be in Berlin this afternoon to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The two will discuss the crucial positions of the Franco-German couple in view of tomorrow's summit.
