The anonymous street artist Banksy he first took to graffiti as a disillusioned young teenager. Inspired by the thriving graffiti community in his hometown of Bristol, Banksy's work began appearing on trains and city streets in 1993, and by 2001, his inked and printed work had sprung up across the UK. Typically making images of him with spray paint and cardboard stencils, Banksy is able to achieve a meticulous level of detail. His aesthetic is clean and immediately understandable thanks to his unique ability to distill complex political and social statements into simple visual elements. His graffiti, paintings and silkscreens use fantasy and humor to satirically criticize war, capitalism, hypocrisy and greed. His anti-establishment spirit has had an undeniable impact on contemporary street culture today.
