Bank of Italy, Visco: "Work more and longer"

“Maintaining the standard of living achieved in our country requires raising the intensity of human capital and starting to grow in total factor productivity. It cannot fail to require that we work harder, harder and longer“. This is the warning governor of the Bank of Italy, Ignazio Visco, at the opening of a conference at Palazzo Koch on the role of women in the labor market.

“It is not a question of a slogan – added the governor – but of an inevitable path, to be tackled with determination, even if with the necessary gradualness“. The governor then spoke of the many obstacles that must be removed for Italy to grow and of the reforms necessary to make the labor market work. “It is also necessary to fight positional rents and particular interests".

With an eye to young people: "We are an elderly country - Visco also explained -: over 2 million young people today do not study, do not work and do not participate in training activities. Of these, 1,2 million are women, and women are the majority both among those who, although available to work, do not actively seek employment, because they believe they do not have sufficient chances of finding one, and among those who are actively looking looking for a job”.
