Bank of Italy, Renzi attacks: "Everything happened in the banks, we need a new page"

The day after the Pd motion approved in the Chamber, Matteo Renzi returned to attacking the supervisory authorities. The political controversy grows and Berlusconi accuses: "The left wants to occupy all the posts before the elections". In view of the hearing of Governor Visco in Parliament

The attack on supervision is direct, unequivocal: “If someone wants to say that nothing has happened in the banking sector in recent years, it's not us, because everything has happened. There has clearly been a lack of effective supervision. We need to write a new page”. The day after the motion of the Pd – who questioned, without ever naming him, the work of the Bank of Italy and therefore of the governor Ignazio Visco – Matteo Renzi, Pd secretary, returns to office and clarifies: “If someone explains the lack of supervision in recent years, he replies to Italians, not the Democratic Party".

“Our motion yesterday – continues Renzi – forcefully explains that there is a need to write a new page. Whoever will be the governor and the choices that the Government and the responsible authorities will make will have full institutional respect from the Pd but yesterday the Pd voted on the motion on the basis of the Government's indications ". These are the words spoken by the secretary of the Democratic Party, on the sidelines of a meeting in Recanati in the early hours of Wednesday afternoon. A final reply concerns the rumors about the internal clash in the Democratic Party - regarding the "Visco case" - with the premier Paolo Gentiloni who would not have been informed in advance by Renzi of the move underway on Tuesday afternoon in the Chamber. “I confess that I find it a little difficult to follow from here the real reasons for the clash. Yesterday there was a motion concerning Bank of Italy that the Pd voted for and had the government reformulated. There is no clash between the Democratic Party and the government because the Democratic Party has changed a motion in terms of collaboration ".

The motion approved yesterday, when a fairly generalized agreement seemed to have been reached on Visco's confirmation expiring on October 31, inevitably continues to fuel the political debate.

Silvio Berlusconi, answering a question about the affair, commented: “I'm not surprised. It is proper to the left to want to fill all the posts after the election. Now they are making progress and want to occupy them even sooner”. The FI group leader in the Chamber, Renato Brunetta, specified that the governor will be heard "as soon as possible" by the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the banks, chaired by Pier Ferdinando Casini.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni went up to the Quirinale for a working lunch with President Mattarella, together with some ministers. The appointment generally precedes all meetings of the EU Council but in this circumstance it was likely to think that the Bank of Italy issue would also be discussed. No comment at the end of the meeting.

Finally, the reaction of the president emeritus of the Republic Roberto Napolitano should be noted: "I actually deal with other things and I don't have to deal with the too many things that happen every day and are deplorable". This is what he replied in the Senate to journalists who asked him to comment on the motion presented by the Pd to the Chamber on the criteria for the appointment of the governor of Bank of Italy.
