The Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, sent the letter containing the proposal for the appointment of the new Governor to the Superior Council of Bank of Italy. Despite the controversies of recent weeks and the clear opposition repeatedly expressed by the secretary of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, the Premier has decided to go ahead on his way in harmony with the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella. The letter contains the name of Ignazio Visco, whose reconfirmation now seems to be one step away.
The last two steps are still missing. The Superior Council of the Bank of Italy, convened for tomorrow morning at 8.30, will have to examine the Premier's proposal and in turn provide a non-binding opinion. Once done, the Council of Ministers called for Friday morning will have to examine and officially approve the appointment, then it will be the President of the Republic, by decree, who will ratify Visco's confirmation.
The outgoing Governor is therefore heading towards his second term, despite the opposition of most of the political forces present in Parliament. "If the prime minister decides to confirm Visco, I don't agree with it, but let's go ahead anyway", Matteo Renzi reiterated yesterday evening in connection with Porta a Porta, emphasizing however that "I would not have confirmed Visco".
