Bank of Italy, appeal by pro-Visco economists

A group of economists (first signatory Filippo Cavazzuti) has launched an appeal to the President of the Republic Mattarella and the Prime Minister Gentiloni to confirm Ignazio Visco at the helm of the Bank of Italy and reject the "attempts to politicize" the institution

A group of economists has launched an appeal to the President of the Republic Mattarella and the Prime Minister Gentiloni to confirm Governor Ignazio Visco at the helm of the Bank of Italy, rejecting the "attempts to politicize" the institution and considering the criticisms of the bank "unfounded" central bank for the vicissitudes of the banks that went into crisis.
This is the text of the appeal:

“The undersigned

they ask the President of the Republic and the President of the Council of Ministers not to support the unusual motion of some parliamentary groups aimed at "opening a new phase" in the Bank of Italy which, according to them, would be achieved by denying the confirmation of Governor Visco;
they believe that such informal requests are detrimental to the powers of proposal and appointment that the law reserves to the autonomy of the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic;
consider dangerous the attempt to politicize the appointments to the top management of an institution whose technical and operational independence, also guaranteed by membership of the European central bank system, is indispensable for the exercise of supervision of the Italian banking system and for the participation of the Bank of Italy to the monetary policy decisions of the European Central Bank; they believe that the motion approved by the Chamber causes dangerous, unjustified and useless damage to the international reputation of the Bank of Italy and of the entire country;
consider the opinion of those who try to attribute all responsibility to the Bank of Italy for the bad management and bankruptcy of some credit institutions to be at least unfounded, on a factual and economic theory level".
