Banks, Padoan: “Other crises? I exclude it. No doubts about Bankitalia and Consob”

But after the solutions found for the Veneto banks and for Mps, the minister launches an appeal to the other institutions: "They must begin to accelerate credit to the economy and get rid of the non-performing loans on their balance sheets more quickly than in the past"

Banks, Padoan: “Other crises? I exclude it. No doubts about Bankitalia and Consob”

“There are certainly no other hotbeds of crisis like the ones that have been closed in recent days.” The reassurance comes from the Minister of Economy, Pier Carlo Padoan, interviewed by Gr1 on the situation of Italian banks after the solutions found in recent days to the crises of Veneto Banca, Pop Vicenza and Ps.

“The banks have to do their job – continued Padoan – With the measures relating to MPS we have put the fourth bank in the country back on track, the Veneto banks have been absorbed by Intesa Sanpaolo, which certainly does not have credibility problems. All other banks must begin to accelerate credit to the economy and get rid of the bad debts on their balance sheets faster than in the past”.

As for the supervisory authorities, "I have no reason to doubt that Consob and Bankitalia have fully performed their functions" with respect to the banking crises of recent months, assured the number one of the Treasury.

On possible errors and responsibilities of the banks in the sale of securities to small savers, Padoan notes that "if there are irresponsible directors they should be prosecuted". Secondly, “savers, especially households, need to be provided with much more information than in the past. And this can be done, it must be done. And it will also be done with public support with initiatives relating to financial education".

Finally, the economy minister said he was "confident" about theparliamentary procedure of the decree for the Veneto banks, to which Intesa San Paolo's willingness to intervene is subordinated: "There is a great job of the government - said Padoan - and I am convinced that there is also a great sense of responsibility on the part of the Parliament".
