Banks, the commission of inquiry is a gift to populism

The parliamentary commission of inquiry into the banks risks becoming an ordeal between the political parties chasing electoral consensus with great benefit of the most vulgar and justicialist populism – But luckily the end of the legislature is near.

Banks, the commission of inquiry is a gift to populism

At night a nightmare assails me: that of carrying out the work of the Commission of Inquiry on Banks. Influenced by the parliamentary debate that took place on the occasion of the establishment of the commission of inquiry on the banks, the works and the investigations of the commission that are more similar to ancient ordeals, to the tribunals of the papal inquisition and to the less ancient works, flow before me in my sleep of the special fascist tribunal whose members were politicians to condemn the enemies of the regime.

This time, in the presence of multiple and conflicting political options that favor identifying enemies rather than adversaries, the ordeal between the political parties will be mainly aimed at gaining some points of consensus in the next general elections. Consequently, the members of the Commission will be incited by the most vulgar and justicialist populism to seek out the party plots that led to the collapse of the various banks; they will fight to find the names and the reference party to take to the pillory. The nocturnal nightmare, always solicited by scraps of news from more or less parliamentary sources, ends with the vision of the solemn ceremony which celebrates (with due Twitter, capable of explaining the whole world in one hundred and forty characters) the conquest by a party of the directorate of the Bank of Italy and its governor.

Then the nightmare vanishes because in the meantime the legislature has come to an end. And the Commission lapses. I hope that the next nightmare does not concern the behavior of the domestic and international financial markets in the astonished expectation of the new elections.
