Italian banks: vanishing profits of 2,6 billion, adjustments and write-downs weigh

In just one year Italian banks have lost over 2 and a half billion in profits along the way. The merciless data emerges from the half-yearly numbers that the credit institutions of our country have published in the last few days.

Between January and June 2012, earnings were just 797,1 million euros. Very little if compared to the 3 billion and 468,2 million collected in the same period last year. But the recession is biting and the bank adjustments and write-downs have been massive. For almost all Italian banks, of course, the most reassuring balance sheet item is that relating to assets, by virtue of the substantial capital increases that have arrived almost everywhere in recent months.

Let's see in detail what was the reduction in half-yearly profits in the accounts of the top six Italian banks:

Unicredit: from 1,321 to 1,083 billion, -18%.

Intesa Sanpaolo: from 1,40 to 1,27 billion, -9,1%.

Montepaschi: it is the institution most in crisis, going from 261,4 million in profit recorded in the first six months of 2011 to a net loss of 1,617 billion archived this year, but the cleaning of the house ordered by Profumo and Viola also weighs on the accounts .

Banco Popolare: from 189,5 to 28,9 million, -84,7%.

Where's Banca: from 251,7 to 159,5 million, -36,6%.

Banca Popolare di Milano: from 49,3 million profit to a loss of 131,3 million.
