Banks: Guzzetti, yes to stress test, but under new conditions. The stability bill does not help the institutions

The president of the Cariplo Foundation, Giuseppe Guzzetti, has asked for new rules for the announced bank stress tests. “We need the same starting conditions for all European institutes,” he said. With regard to the Stability Bill which modifies the deductibility of credit losses, he expressed his opposition.

The same starting conditions are needed for all European banks. This is what Giuseppe Guzzetti, president of the Cariplo Foundation and of Acri, stated in reference to the announced new stress tests for banks.

Guzzetti said he did not want a repetition of the EBA tests, "a paradigmatic event that forced Italian banks to take into account investments in Italian government bonds", which "has not been done in other countries". So he asked for "different conditions" for the next tests.

The president of Fondazione Cariplo recalled that the Bank of Italy has done a good job in recent years and that Italian banks are solid, also because they have made "heavy capital" increases. On the situation of Carige and Mps, he said that these are "episodes" and that the "system is healthy".

With regards, then, to the new measure introduced in the Ddl Stabilità, which would lower the deductibility of credit losses for Italian banks from 18 years to 5 years, he commented: “Once again the Italian government has taken a more negative measure for credit institutions. I don't think it will create any advantage."
