Banks, Abi: favorite internet channel

With over 17 million current accounts, the Internet is confirmed as the preferred channel for banking transactions by families. This was revealed by the seventh report on the multi-channel nature of banks produced by the Bancomat consortium with Abi. Through the web, Italians make transfers and payments, top up prepaid cards and service cards, buy and sell securities. And 53% of current accounts surf the internet, for an increase of more than 12% in just one year.

Operating with online banking - says the study - "is an increasingly widespread practice among Italians: over 18 million accounts, equal to 55% of the total, are enabled for at least one of the alternative channels to the traditional branch (+12,2 % compared to 2009)”.

In 2010, there were 17,3 million current accounts enabled to operate via the Internet, an increase of over 12% compared to 2009. Of these, 10,7 million are online only, more than double compared to the 4,2 million of the year Before. Consultation of the account statement was the most frequent operation (on average 1,7 times a week).

Transfers are confirmed in second place. Cell phone top-ups, online payments and prepaid card top-ups follow. Current accounts enabled for phone banking are instead 10,1 million, equal to 31% of the total, in line with the 11 million of 2009.

The report also highlights that "we are in the midst of the mobile banking revolution: the rapid emergence of new generation mobile phones, smartphones and tablets has radically changed the conception of this channel, effectively making the authorizations for mobile banking coincide with those for the online channel ”.
