Banca Etruria, open clash between Pm Arezzo and Bankitalia on merger with Vicenza

High-voltage session at the Parliamentary Commission on Banks. The chief prosecutor of Arezzo, Roberto Rossi, has openly accused the Bank of Italy of having advocated the merger between Banca Etruria and Popolare di Vicenza despite both being in a state of collapse. Via Nazionale – Rossi declared – Popolare di Vicenza was considered “a partner of high standing” for the purposes of the merger with Etruria and this “was a little strange”.

Via Nazionale replied by denying having supported the merger but blaming the former president of Popolare Vicenza, Gianni Zonin, with the responsibility for having moved in this direction, without ever having had the authorization from the central bank. But on this very delicate point, for the purposes of the credibility of the Supervision of the Bank of Italy, which will now also be investigated by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office, the reconstructions differ and the Pd seized the opportunity given by the declarations of the Arezzo Public Prosecutor to support that they are proven proof that Via Nazionale did not supervise as it should have the banks that later entered into crisis.

But the chief prosecutor of Arezzo, who in the past was a consultant to Palazzo Chigi for legal affairs and who for this reason is subject to verification by the CSM for possible conflict of interest, said something else that can fuel or extinguish the political controversies , when he declared that Pierluigi Boschi, father of the current undersecretary to the Prime Minister Maria Elena, was not a member of the Executive Committee and the Credit Committee of Banca Etruria and has "never participated in resolutions" on the loans which then led to the bankruptcy of the Tuscan institute.

Yesterday's hearing certainly marks a point in favor of the Pd's battle and puts the Bank of Italy in further difficulty, but it is unlikely that he will end the controversy over the banks and Banca Etruria which will accompany the entire next electoral campaign.
