From director's notes
Is it human or child sized?
Here we were different.
“A city on a human scale”: this is how Bologna and, more generally, Emilia Romagna were described.
In reality, our size was a thousand times smaller and larger at the same time; child-friendly.
Are we still the city (land) of children? This is the starting question we want to ask ourselves.
Starting from the school system of nursery schools and kindergartens, passing through the various cultural and entertainment proposals dedicated to early childhood, we want to embark on a small journey into the first years of life.
This trip won't be a sort of childhood Wikipedia, we don't have ambitions of exhaustiveness or completeness, we simply want (through a handful of faces and experiences) to tell everyone's effort and professionalism.
We think that the quality of the response – cultural, political and social – to the needs of childhood also depends on the ability we will have to recalibrate and update it according to the new challenges we will face.
The documentary seemed to us the right and effective tool to collect testimonies and experiences and, at the same time, tell a story.
Observing is a good way to start answering and, perhaps, to formulate more questions.
Newer, more current, more useful to those who will have to give answers.
We will then take a walk, a little trip, through Bologna (and beyond) on the trail of the energies, professionalism and efforts of the world of childhood.
The invisible embrace that awaits our children once they leave the house.
That network which, first, welcomes the child in the very first steps of his journey and, working and supervising the growth of the child himself, gives them back to us - close to school age - healthy and happy.
What do we know about the work of these people?
For once let's talk about them.
