Bad weather: still frost alert (VIDEO)

The wave of frost and snow continues, bringing the central and southern regions to their knees in particular. Snowstorms and strong winds are hitting Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia, Basilicata and Sicily. Today, temperatures continue to remain low. However, the snowfalls are less intense than on Saturday. The Civil Protection recommends not to travel in the affected areas, unless strictly necessary and only with snow tires or chains fitted.

Weather forecasts indicate that a new perturbation will mainly affect the Adriatic coast and the southern regions, also signaling "the persistence of very low temperatures and strong winds". The mercury column remained below zero tonight in many Italian cities. In the north there were -7 degrees in Verona, -2 in Florence. In Sicily, in Catania at sea level the minimums reached 3 degrees, while in Palermo they reached 4 degrees.

In central Italy, in more hilly or mountainous areas, however, much lower values were recorded, such as -14 degrees in Cascia, in the province of Perugia (Umbria) or -10 degrees in Accumoli, in the province of Rieti (Lazio). Two localities affected by the earthquake of last August 24, in which nearly 300 people lost their lives.

Meanwhile, yesterday the victims of the cold rose to eight. The first to pay the price for low temperatures were homeless people. To deal with the frost emergency, especially for the homeless, points of shelter for the night and refreshments have been organized in some cities. In Turin, for example, a reception point was set up in the atrium of the Porta Nuova underground thanks to the work of volunteers. In Messina Palazzo Zanca, seat of the Municipality, will remain open tonight and until temperatures normalize.

In many municipalities in southern Italy such as Bari, Matera, Salerno, Lecce, schools will be closed on both January XNUMX and XNUMX. The University of Bari Aldo Moro has also decided to suspend lessons and exams. A series of initiatives implemented to limit inconvenience and meet the invitation of the Prefectures not to travel on the roads with the current weather conditions.
