Company Description

Boeing Company is a American aerospace company. It produces aircraft for civil and military use. Boeing designs, manufactures and sells aircraft, rotorcraft, rockets, satellites, telecommunications equipment and missiles worldwide. It also provides leasing services and product support.

Boeing is among the largest global aerospace manufacturers and is the world's second-largest defense contractor by revenue and the largest US exporter by dollar value. In 1997 it absorbed its main competitor la McDonnell Douglas. Its major competitor is Airbus, a European aircraft company.

Boeing Company is divided into three divisions:

  • Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA), which operates in the civil sector and develops, manufactures and markets jets, aircraft and provides related support services to the airline industry.
  • Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS), which deals with the military and space sector for the development, production and modification of manned and unmanned military aircraft and weapons systems.
  • Boeing Capital Corporation (BCC), which deals with finance and leasing solutions, notes and other receivables, assets held for sale or relocation, and investments.

Boeing was founded in Seattle in 1916 by William Boeing e George Conrad WesterveltUnited States Marine Engineer. The initial name, derived from their initials, was B&W, changed shortly after to Pacific Aero Products and in 1917 in Boeing Airplane Company.

William Boeing in 1927 creates an airline the Boeing Air Transport (BAT). The following year Bat and Boeing Airplane Company merged into one company.
Following a law in 1934 which forbade the possibility of being both a manufacturer and owner of an airline, the company was dismembered into three smaller companies: Boeing Airplane Company, United Airlines e United Aircraft and Transport Corporation.

In 1938, Boeing created it Stratoliner, first aircraft with a pressurized cabin. During World War II, Boeing was active in the creation of bombers.

During the Cold War, as technology developed, the company developed short-range and intercontinental missiles.

In 1960, Boeing acquired the Piasecki Helicopter, which later became the Boeing Vertol.

In 1967, Boeing began selling a short- to medium-haul airliner, the twin-engine B737. This aircraft will become the best-selling airliner in aviation history. The Boeing 737, with some slight modifications, is still in production.

Boeing also begins to operate in the space sector in the program Apollo. Later, thanks to this experience, Boeing helped create the space rockets for the project Space Shuttle. Boeing will participate in other space projects. To date, Boeing is the largest contractor in the construction of the International Space Station.

In 1970 the B747, a four-engine long-range jet. This model marks a new way of flying, thanks to its capacity of 450 passengers. Until 2001, with the arrival of the Airbus A380, it will remain the largest airliner in the world.

In 1996 Boeing bought the Rockwell International, which became a subsidiary with the name Boeing North American.

In 1997 it acquired the McDonnell Douglas for 13 billion dollars. The company takes on its current name Boeing Company.

In 2000 the company bought the satellite segment of Hughes Electronics which will become the Boeing Satellite Development Center.

Since the 2000s, competition has grown with Airbus, which was able to offer aircraft with fly-by-wire technology. In Airbus it entered the markets where Boeing held the monopoly.

In 2001, the headquarters moved from Seattle to Chicago.

Since 2015, Boeing has been patenting a drone that can both fly and dive into water. It has also patented the "Compact Laser Weapons System", a powerful anti-drone cannon which, through the use of a laser, increases the temperature of the aircraft leading to its demolition.

In 2018, Boeing opened its first factory in Europe in Sheffield, UK, bolstered by a research partnership with the University of Sheffield.
