In 1922 the company was renamed Bavarian Motor Works AG (BMW), in Italian "Bavarian engine factory", a joint-stock company with a share capital of 12 million German marks, one third of which is owned by the Italian commercial adviser Camillus Castiglioni.

After the end of the First World War, BMW remained in business producing motorcycle engines, agricultural equipment, household goods and railway brakes.

Aircraft engines, motorcycles and automobiles became BMW's main products until World War II.

During the Second World War the BMW factories were heavily bombed and after the war they were banned from producing motor vehicles or aircraft.

The company survived by making pots, pans and bicycles. In 1948, BMW resumed motorcycle production while automobile production was resumed in 1952.

During the 50s BMW was in dire financial straits and in 1959 the company was nearly taken over by its rival Daimler Benz. The company was saved by the investments of Herbert Quandt e Harald Quandt.

The Quandt family was instrumental in the resurgence of BMW as a prestige car manufacturer.

It introduces luxury sedans and coupe models to its range. The models BMW 700 e BMW 1500, were very successful and brought the brand back into vogue.

In 1966 BMW took over the German brand Glass, which dealt with low-end and mid-range cars. The Glas models would be marketed under the BMW brand while continuing to produce passenger cars.

Between the XNUMXs and XNUMXs, BMW increasingly consolidated its role as a manufacturer until it assumed global significance.
