Autostrade or Fincantieri: it's a clash over the reconstruction of the Morandi Bridge

For Deputy Prime Minister Di Maio and Minister Toninelli the line has been drawn: "Autostrade will have to put in the money, but we'll do the reconstruction". Between clashes and controversies, the Fincantieri-Cdp hypothesis emerges. Renzo Piano also takes the field by donating a project to the city.

Autostrade or Fincantieri: it's a clash over the reconstruction of the Morandi Bridge

"Autostrade puts the money in, but we'll rebuild the bridge". This is the line reiterated by the Minister of Infrastructure, Danilo Toninelli, during an interview given to Radio Me too on the future of the Morandi bridge in Genoa, whose collapse last August 14 cost the lives of 43 people.

Less than 24 hours after the hearing in Parliament, during which the number one of the Infrastructures announced the willingness to overhaul the entire system of state concessions, the controversy surrounding the reconstruction continues. Who is responsible for rebuilding the bridge? To Autostrade per l'Italia or to Fincantieri – Cdp? The second hypothesis seems to be the one carried out by the Five Stars, while the League, for the moment, remains more guardian.

“That Autostrade has to rebuild the bridge is obvious in terms of compensation – explained Toninelli a Radio Me too - On the enormous moral and civil damages it is normal that he has to put the money, but it is equally normal that he cannot rebuild. It would be disrespectful to families and citizens."

According to Toninelli, the new bridge "must be sealed, tested and designed by the State". Speaking in simple terms: Autostrade will have to put in the money, but the project and its realization will belong to another entity, also because leaving the task of reconstruction to Autostrade "would be madness, it would be disrespectful towards the families of the victims. But what sense of security could we give – he observed – to having the bridge built by those who brought it down?” commented the minister.

The executive led by Giuseppe Conte, who maintains the now traditional silence on the issue, will therefore oppose any reconstruction plan carried out by Aspi. And that's where it comes in the Fincantieri hypothesis, also supported by the deputy premier, Luigi Di Maio. "We certainly have excellent companies, Fincantieri is one of these, with CDP behind us, this is a road but it is a decision that the government takes", concluded Toninelli.

However, the president of the Liguria Region is against this hypothesis, John Toti, who replied directly to Di Maio on Twitter, explaining that Autostrade is and remains the number one interlocutor for the reconstruction of the viaduct. Toti looks realistically at the problem of reconstruction, pressed as he is by the need to guarantee accelerated times for the process.

The issue has also been addressed Mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci: “Autostrade is collaborating in trying to carry on the projects agreed with the government and with the city of Genoa. For example, local mobility is the first project we want Autostrade to work on. The other major project is the demolition of the bridge. Autostrade must demolish the bridge”.

"We asked the company - continued Bucci - to give us the demolition project within 5 days". The mayor, arriving at the CI meeting in Rimini, also expressed his opinion on the Fincantieri-Cdp hypothesis, which proved to be available. The CDP then offered the possibility of drawing up a collaboration protocol to ensure that we can talk not only about the reconstruction of the bridge but also about all the other infrastructures that serve Genoa", continued Bucci, underlining that "we will be a first case example where Cdp wants to collaborate with the Region and the Municipality to make a project for the growth of an urban environment and metropolitan city that can take Genoa to a higher level. I think this is a beautiful and important thing for all of Italy”.

And speaking of good projects, he also took the field for Genoa Renzo Piano. Genoese by birth, the Ligurian archiater gave his city "an idea of a bridge" – as he calls it – which materialized in the model transported this morning to the Liguria Region. ”

“I've got an idea of what the new bridge should look like – Piano said -, but it's only the beginning. A designer thinks and reasons with the help of objects and sketches. From here to say that there is a design idea is excessive, there is a moral commitment to ensure that the new bridge carries with it the traits of Genoese quality and a little of our thrift. There must be a bridge that expresses all of this, there must be the memory of a tragedy and its development over time”. However, the most famous architect in the world has specified that he does not believe “in the record times for reconstruction. I believe in the right times, we need to act quickly but not in a hurry”.

Meanwhile the political controversies affect the performance of the stocks involved in MY BAG: Atlantia loses 3,49% to 18,1 euros, Fincantieri instead gains 2,96% against a Ftse Mib down by 0,4%.

Going back to the bridge, on the first weekend back after the holidays, serious inconvenience on the streets of Genoa. The most delicate situation is at the Sestri Ponente junction, but traffic problems are also encountered in Bolzaneto when leaving the motorway tollbooth, in the city and in Borzoli, the only outlet for the Valpolcevera from the west. On the motorway there are delays between the A12 and the A7 and at the toll booths of Genova Aeroporto and Bolzaneto.

Meanwhile, a meeting is underway in the public prosecutor's office in Genoa between the chief prosecutor Francesco Cozzi, the deputy Paolo D'Ovidio and the consultants appointed Malerba and Buratti.
