EU cars, goodbye to diesel and petrol in 2035

The appointment is set for Wednesday 14 July, the day on which the European Commission will present the long-awaited package of measures aimed at enabling the European Union to achieve i targets set on climate and environment. The plan will include heterogeneous provisions regarding all sectors of the economy, from construction to transport and the car. The goal is ambitious: reduce emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels by 2030 - an objective already defined with the directive approved by the European Parliament in recent days - to then achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

According to rumors in the package that will define the concrete directives to which the States will then have to adapt, it could find space a revolutionary proposal for the automotive sector which will imply the cessation of the sale of petrol and diesel cars in Europe as early as 2035.

In an interview with Ansa, the climate director general of the Commission, Mauro Petriccione, anticipated the possibility of introducing a 2030 target of 40 grams of CO2 per kilometre, a goal that would translate into a reduction in emissions for new cars by 60% compared to today. Add a target of 100% by 2035 it would mean saying goodbye to diesel and petrol engines throughout the European Union. Italy, through the words of the Minister for Infrastructure Enrico Giovannini, is thinking about the stop for petrol and diesel engines from 2040.

For climate neutrality by 2050 "according to the International Energy Agency all new cars placed on the global market will have to have zero emissions by 2035 - explained the president of the European Parliament's Environment Commission Pascal Canfin - and European manufacturers have need a clear political signal”. “They are just indiscretions - is the comment from Acea, the EU builders' association – we await the proposal”. July 14 will be the day of truth.
