Cars, almost 2 million cars sold in Italy in 2017: FCA over 28%

Overall, 2017 was a positive year for the sector, even if the pre-crisis levels are still far away. FCA against the trend in December, led by the strong growth of Jeep and Alfa Romeo. Giulietta and Stelvio among the best-selling cars in December.

The year just ended was positive for the Italian car market. Italy, fourth country for volumes behind Germany, France and the United Kingdom, recorded one million and 970 thousand registrations in 2017, with the highest growth rate among those of the main markets (+7,9%).

However, pre-crisis levels are still a long way off. The sector ended 2007 with about two and a half million vehicles registered.

This is the third consecutive year of volume recovery. The month of December however, it marked an unexpected setback (-3,17% of registrations compared to December 2016). Operators and analysts in the sector expect 2018 to be the year of exceeding the threshold of two million registrations.

2017 was characterized by the advent of important innovations, above all the growth in the share of alternative fuel cars. For this type of car, registrations grew by 25% from January to November, bringing the market share of hybrid, electric and gas cars to 11,6% since the beginning of the year. The market is still dominated by cars Diesel (56,4% of new cars registered), followed by those powered by petrol (32%). Vehicle registration boom a Km 0, 100 thousand more than in 2016, 17% of the total of new registrations.

Among the operators in the sector, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles it closed 2017 with a 2016% increase in registrations compared to 5,5 (557.500 more cars). FCA still holds the largest share of the market (28,3%) despite the market contraction in December.

Brand sales are growing Alfa Romeo (successes for Giulia and Stelvio), Jeep e Fiat. This is the best year ever for Jeep (+22,3% in registrations) thanks to the excellent results of the Renegade and Compass models.
