Auto: EU market slows down in March, FCA below average

Last month, new car registrations in European countries fell by 5,2% year-on-year, while those of the FCA group fell by 8% – Balza Psa with Opel (+59,8%), Volkswagen remains stable ( -0,04) – Renault (-3,2) and Ford (-14,6%) lose ground.

Slow down in March the European car market and for FCA the setback is heavier than the average. According to the latest data released by the manufacturers' association Acea, last month new car registrations in the EU and EFTA countries stopped at 1.836.960 units, down 5,2% on an annual basis.

In detail, the decline in the European Union was 5,3%: this is not only the first drop in 2018 but also the first drop recorded for the month of March for four years now.

Il Italian market is in line with the European trend: -5,8% in March with 213.731 cars registered. The balance for the first quarter in Italy is slightly negative (-1,5%), with just over 574 new cars registered.

For Fiat Chrysler, in March the group registered 120.591 new cars in the EU and EFTA: the result is down by 8% on the year. FCA's market share in Europe thus drops from 6,8 to 6,6%.

In the first quarter of 2018, Fiat Chrysler recorded a drop of 4,3%, with just over 290 cars registered compared to over 300 in the period January-March 2017.

Among the brands of the group, the most significant drop was recorded by Lancia / Chrysler (-37,5%), followed by Fiat (-12,5%), while Jeep marks a new surge (+42,3%).

Among the other major European manufacturers, Psa leaps with Opel (+59,8%) and remains stable Volkswagen (-0,04). They lose ground Renault (-3,2) and Ford (-14,6%).
