Auto, the crisis continues: registrations -24,6% in November

While Italy is on the road to economic recovery, with the OECD forecasting a +6,3% increase in GDP by the end of the year, continues the deep crisis of the car. After the -35,78% recorded in October, in November, according to data from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, 104.478 vehicles were registered in our country, 24,6% less than in the same month last year . November is ififth consecutive month of decline for registrations in Italy: it is from July 2021 that the change is negative compared to the corresponding month of 2020. And again: from January to November 2021 there were 1.371.166 registrations, up by 8,6% from 1.262.136 in the same period of 2020, but down by 22,8% compared to the 1.371.166 registrations in 2019, notes Unrae, the National Union of Foreign Motor Vehicle Representatives.

“The transition to decarbonisation cannot be effectively and sustainably accompanied if action is not taken by supporting demand with a structural and multi-year plan also for the replacement of the fleet in circulation', points out Michele Crisci, president of Unrae.

Looking at individual brands, the ranking of the 10 best-selling cars in November in Italy, the Fiat Panda is in first place, with 8.737 registrations. The Lancia Ypsilon (3.207 units) and the Dacia Sandero (2.969) follow. In fourth place is Dacia Duster with 2.929 cars registered. The Top Ten is completed by Toyota Yaris Cross (2.655), Volkswagen T-Roc (2.421), Citroen C3 (2.396), Jeep Compass (2.108), Ford Ecosport (2.010) and Jeep Renegade (2.004).

In percentage terms, good news comes above all for dr, the Molise-based car manufacturer which registered 1.121 cars, an increase of 161,92% compared to the same month in 2020. Tesla's sales are also growing, with 438 units (+66,54%). Double-digit increases also for Hyundai (+44,11% to 3.842 units), Kia (+37,89% to 3.872) and Porsche (34,34% to 669).

The most significant push-ups however, they concern Alfa Romeo (-51,94% to 954 units), and Jaguar (-42,67% to 219 units).

Based on the numbers obtained so far, the forecasts for the whole of 2021 are far from positive. According to the Centro Studi Promotor, in fact, it is probable that the car market will close the year with 1.460.000 registrations, "a really low level, if one considers that to ensure the regular replacement of the Italian vehicle fleet, a volume of registrations of 2.000.000 per year. The conclusion is that the Italian fleet of cars in circulation, which is the oldest in Europe, will be even older, more polluting and less safe”, underlines the president of the Centro Studi Promotor, Gian Primo Quagliano.

“In addition to the prolongation of the semiconductor crisis, the total absence, in the current text of the 2022 Budget Law, of measures to address the ecological and energy transition of the sector is very worrying, since no funds have been allocated either to support demand or to support supply", comments Paolo Scudieri, president of Anfia (National Association of the Automotive Industry), according to which "'it is essential to provide a structural plan for at least three years and with adequate funding to prevent Italy, in this delicate phase in which market policies are essential, is the only European country not to direct and support consumers in the purchase of zero and very low emission cars”.
