Auto: EU market slows down, FCA exploits with Jeep

After the boom in April, registrations in Europe are slowing down, according to Acea data: +0,6% compared to May 2017 – FCA records a modest +0,2% but flies with the Jeep brand which doubles sales and defends itself well with Alfa Romeo – Fiat is down, but dominates with mini cars in France and Spain.

According to Acea data, registrations in the 28 countries of the European Union and EFTA (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) were 1.442.643, 0,6% more than in the same month last year. In the first five months of the year, 7.076.504 cars were sold, 2,2% more than in the same period of 2017.

In this context, the FCA group recorded an even smaller growth, 0,2% with 110.120 car sales compared to May 2017, with the share falling imperceptibly from 7,7% to 7,6%. In the first five months of the year, the Group registered a total of 491.738 cars, 2,2% less than in the same period of 2017. The figure is conditioned by the negative performance of the Fiat brand and Lancia-Chrysler, which respectively lost 11,1% and 5,4%. While the real thing should be emphasized exploit of Jeep, which doubles its sales (+101%), and also the very significant performance of Alfa Romeo, with +12,2%.

Looking at individual countries in detail, FCA achieved decidedly positive results in some of the main European markets. Indeed, increases sales in France (+25,1% in a market that grows by 0,2%) and in
Spain (+15,2% compared to +7,2% overall). The same goes for the first five months of 2018: in France sales increased by 17,2%, a much higher value than the growth of the transalpine market: +3,5%. In Spain +19,3% with the market at +10,5%. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles both in May and in the yearly progressive reveals the fourth manufacturer in Europe for sales volumes.

FIAT

The Fiat brand is registering 76.700 cars in Europe in May. The share is 5,3 percent. Although with a negative sign overall, the brand recorded increases in sales in France (+20,1 percent) and Spain (+8,6 percent). In the first five months of the year, Fiat registered nearly 348.400 cars, achieving a 4,9 percent share. As in the monthly result, the brand increased its sales in France (+14,1 percent) and Spain (+13,2 percent). The Fiat 500 and Panda are once again the two best-selling cars in segment A, consolidating the brand's undisputed leadership in the mini car segment: in May, together, they held a 32,25 percent share.

LANCIA-CHRYSLER-ALFA ROMEO

In May Lancia/Chrysler registered over 5 cars, for a share of 0,4 per cent. In the progressive year, 23.200 Lancias are registered, with a share of 0,3 percent. In May, Alfa Romeo registrations were almost 9.200, an increase of 12,2% compared to a year ago. The share is stable at 0,6 percent. In the progressive year, the registrations of the brand are over 41.800, 12,9 percent more than in 2017, for a share of 0,6 percent, up by 0,1 percentage points. The brand obtained better results than the market in many European countries, both in the month (in Italy +3,8 per cent, in Germany +8,6 per cent, in France +7,2 per cent and in the United Kingdom +32 per percent) and progressively over the year: +15,2 per cent in Italy and +12,6 per cent in France. Among the models, the excellent results of Stelvio and Giulia should be noted. The brand's first SUV, after confirming its leadership in its segment in Italy, is firmly among the top ten in Europe in the segment with over 3.100 registrations in May and more than 13.600 progressively, with very strong growth (+218,4 percent ) compared to last year. Giulia is confirmed as a highly appreciated car in the D segment with 8.500 registrations per year in Europe, while in Italy it is among the best-selling in the category.

JEEP

The Jeep brand achieves a real exploit in May, with sales more than doubling compared to the same month last year: almost 18.500 registrations, for a growth of 101,3 percent (no other brand reports such a large increase) and a share at 1,3 percent, up by a good 0,7 percentage points. Very positive results for the brand from all markets: +129,6 percent in Italy, +28,9 per cent in Germany, +72,7 per cent in France, +115,2 per cent in the United Kingdom and +77,5 per cent in Spain. In the progressive year, the registered Jeeps are 74, 66,4 percent more than in the first five months of last year and the share is 1 percent, up by 0,4 percentage points. Jeep is growing in almost all major markets: +102,6 percent in Italy, +14,5 percent in Germany, +44,8 percent in France and +80,1 percent in Spain.

In May, again Renegade is confirmed among the ten best-selling models in its segment, with 8.600 registrations and a growth of 19,1 percent. Equally positive was the strong growth in sales of Compass with almost 8.300 registrations in May and 33.200 progressively over the year. Luxury brand Maserati is registering 645 cars in May and 3.689 in the first five months of 2018.
