Auto sales boom in April: Stellantis queen of the market

Stellantis queen of the car market in April. This is certified by the Acea builders' association, according to which the group born from the merger between FCA and PSA last month reported a 330% increase in registrations, achieving the best performance at European level.

Going into details, in April Stellantis (follow the performance of shares on the Stock Exchange) increased its market share by almost over six percentage points, going from 17,4 to 23,5% with 202 cars registered (+330%). It should be emphasized that the three-digit increase, as for all other car manufacturers, is mainly due to the collapse recorded in 2020, when due to the explosion of the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent restrictions imposed in all countries, the market experienced a very strong braking.

Going forward with the other big groups, Volkswagen it increased sales by 195% with 232 new registrations, but its market share fell from 29,1 to 26,9%. Same trend for Renault whose share rose from 10,3% to 9,2%. The German Daimler marks a +329%, with a market share of 6,6%, while BMW records +206,7% with a market share of 7,7%.

Expanding the time horizon, since the beginning of 2021, based on Acea data, Stellantis registered 806 thousand new cars (+34%), reaching a market share of 23,6%; Volkswagen sold 883 vehicles (+19,3%) with a market share down by 1,1% to 25,8%.

Moving on to the general data, in the month of April Italy is the market that recorded the greatest increase of new registrations, rising from the 4.295 vehicles sold in April 2020, when the country was subjected to a heavy lockdown, to the over 145 new cars registered by car manufacturers last April +3.276%. Level European (Eurozone, plus EFTA countries and Great Britain) registrations exceeded 1,03 million units last month, with an increase of 255% compared to April 2020 (comparison conditioned, as mentioned, by the pandemic) while in Ue the increase is 218,6% to 862.226 units and inEurozone by 281,9% to 760 thousand units. The April figure also puts the year-to-date balance sheet in the black with a +24,4%.

Despite the three-digit increases, Acea underlines, “registrations in April are still with a gap of 300 thousand units compared to the levels recorded two years ago, before the pandemic, in April 2019".

As for other countries, the Germany marks a +90%, the France a +568% and the Spain a +1,787%.
