2025 opens with a Increase in motorway tolls for Italians. From 1st January, an increase came into force on a significant part of the national motorway network. The increase, established by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, was introduced for aadjust rates to the inflation forecast for the year. Not all routes will be affected by the increase to the same extent. Let's see which ones they are.
Toll increase: why and how much
The increase in motorway tolls will be between 1,6% and 1,8%, depending on the routesThe adjustment was planned to ensure that motorway tolls remain aligned with inflation, which in 2025 has been estimated at around 1,8%. In practical terms, this means that the cost of travelling on motorways managed by some of the main concession companies will undergo a small increase.
The decree particularly concerns motorway sections managed by the Autostrade per l'Italia companies (Aspi) and from the Salerno Pompeii Naples. Autostrade per l'Italia is by far the largest concessionaire, managing about 2.800 kilometers of motorway out of a total of about 6.000 kilometers. The most well-known routes that fall under its management, such as the A1 Milan-Naples or the A14 Bologna-Taranto, will therefore be the ones mainly affected by the price increase.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has confirmed that for For the routes not managed by these two companies, the tolls will remain unchanged. The increases, in fact, have been limited to those routes whose Economic-Financial Plans (Pef) have been updated, while no increase is foreseen for all the other concessionary companies.
A price increase for users but less than expected
These price increases represent a further burden on daily expenses, especially considering the trend of inflation and other increases in the cost of living. The Ministry, however, confirmed that the “general discounts for users” will continue to apply, thus helping to reduce the impact of the increase. Without these discounts, the increases would have been higher, reaching up to 3%.
