Attack in Berlin: trucks on the crowd

A truck has crashed into a crowded Christmas market. It happened in Berlin in Breitscheidplatz, at the foot of the Gedaechtniskirche, the "Church of Remembrance", one of the symbolic places.

According to the first news from the German media there are at least 9 dead and about 50 injured. After the first few minutes of caution, the police no longer seem to have any doubts: it is an attack.

At 20.15, the truck invaded a sidewalk near the Church of Remembrance where the Christmas market is located: "According to information from the police, an attack was presumably carried out with a truck": writes the Dpa agency quoting a spokesman for the police.

According to what was reported by the German ZDF, a person suspected of being the driver of the truck would have been arrested. A second man who was on the truck died in the collision, while a third person is still wanted.

According to reports from Ansa, ISIS would have claimed responsibility for the attack. The PMU, the coalition of Iraqi militias fighting the caliphate, read the claim on an ISIS online channel.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel "mourns the victims" of the attack. The Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni expressed his condolences through a tweet: "Sorrow for the Christmas massacre in #Berlin, closeness to Angela Merkel and to all the German people".
