At the court of Raboso: three days in Treviso to discover the Piave wines

Masterclasses, tasting tables and the discovery of the typical food and wine heritage of the area: from 21 to 23 October in the historic center of Treviso Alla Corte del Raboso will be held, the scheduled AIS Veneto event, entirely dedicated to the typical grapes of Trentino. Three days to discover Raboso and the great wines of the Piave lands. A busy calendar of events will allow participants to get to know the history and peculiarities of this vine and its production area up close, together with traditional local foods and the historical and cultural beauties of the city of Treviso. The absolute novelty of this edition is the Best Sommelier of Raboso competition, where among the three semi-finalists the winner will be the one who stands out for his theoretical knowledge, technical and tasting skills.

Masterclasses, tasting tables and the discovery of the typical food and wine heritage of the area: from 21st to 23rd October

The name Raboso (masculine) identifies two native black grape varieties from the Piave area (Raboso Friulano and Raboso Veronese). However, there are two other white vines (feminine) that can be traced back phonetically, but not genetically [citation needed], to the Raboso vine: white Rabosina and white Rabosa. All 4 vines share a marked acidity, a characteristic that makes them easily distinguishable from all the others. The origins of the name Raboso are disputed: it could refer to the stream of the same name that flows in the Quartier del Piave, or derive from the Venetian term rabioso due to its strongly acidic flavour. Precisely for this reason Raboso was long considered a "rustic" vine, suitable for the production of lower quality products and blending wines. However, modern cultivation and winemaking techniques have significantly revalued it and today Raboso is the basis of 2 DOCs (DOC Piave and DOC Venezia) and one DOCG (DOCG Malanotte).

The event kicks off on Saturday 21 October with the Preview of Alla Corte del Raboso, where under the Loggia dei Cavalieri, starting from 15pm and until 30pm, you will be able to taste five products commented by the AIS Sommeliers. Also from the Loggia, at 18 pm, the guided tour of the city of Treviso will begin among paintings and waters. Thanks to the story of Edi Conson, tour guide and Sommelier, it will be possible to admire the beauty of the city accompanied on a short itinerary designed for the event. The first day of the event will end with a gourmet appointment at the Ca' dei Brittoni restaurant, where a menu specially created for the occasion will satisfy the most demanding palates. Accompanying the dishes will be the best expressions of Raboso and Piave wines.

The event closed with the announcement of the Best Sommelier of Raboso

On Sunday 22 October, starting from 10am, the splendid rooms of the Santa Caterina Museum will host the tasting tables: 30 producers of Raboso and the native Piave wines will offer over 26 products for tasting accompanied by a selection of food artisans to best savor the typical Treviso products. The entrance ticket, in addition to the visit to the museum complex, also includes a dish of Roots and Fasoi prepared by the brotherhood of the same name, which guarantees its quality and historicity. At 90pm the Loggia dei Cavalieri will host the Espressioni di Raboso tasting, led by the President of AIS Veneto Gianpaolo Breda and the director of the Consorzio Vini Venezia Stefano Quaggio, where the different production styles of the most representative companies will be explained.

The event will close on Monday 23 October at Villa Dirce in Tezze di Piave, in Vazzola, home of Raboso. Stefano Quaggio will lead the first part of the 11:00 masterclass dedicated to the present, past and future of the vine and wine, then passing the baton to Gianpaolo Breda, who will talk about six expressions of Malanotte del Piave Docg. This will be followed by the Le Bellussere, the Grave del Piave and the Borgo Malanotte tour led by Antonio Bonotto, owner of the Bonotto delle Tezze company, and Elvio Forato, director of the Cantina di Tezze, to discover the territory and the production area. The event will close with the announcement of the Best Sommelier of Raboso, scheduled to start from 15pm.
