Watch auction: from Rolex to Vacheron, everyone is crazy about the cult object

Gianni Agnelli he wore it on his cuff, James Bond he never separates from his Omega ea Paul Newman they even dedicated a Rolex. Men of charm, like women, have always paid great attention to the choice of their watches. By now the Italians have also been infected: only for this market in the 2018 it was found, in a research by Assorologi – Gfk, un value equal to approx 1,4 billion, equivalent to 6,5 million watches sold.

Value Custody, company of Loan on pledge, dedicate an auction on 14nd June at its headquarters in Rome, in Piazza del Monte di Pietà. The auction features cult watches, ranging from a Rolex Submariner of '77/'78, with an auction base of 7 thousand euros and a market value (estimated by the seller) of around 12-14 thousand euros, passing to a Vacheron Constantin from the fifties, with an estimated market value of around 14 thousand euros, which will start from an auction base of 3.500 euros, up to a Audemars Piguet chronograph, with an auction base of 7.500 euros, and a market value of the same level as the previous models.

All prices presented, assures the auction house, are certified by experts which guarantee the'originality.

“Watches have always been a passion of Italians. The latter love to wear them, even taking into account the value they acquire over time. Choosing the right watch can in fact represent an investment, or even a simple choice of "passion". That's why we decided to dedicate an auction to these design and technological accessories, offering a range of different specimens, ranging from collectors' pieces to less sought-after and more accessible models. However, it is not said that the objects on display are used. In fact, these are often new watches, originally purchased as collector's items. This auction therefore represents an extraordinary opportunity for anyone wishing to conclude the deal of their dreams”. has explained Andreas Wedenig, general manager of Custody of Value.

Here are some tips, proposed by Pierfrancesco Velletrani, head of the appraisal and sales function of Custodia Valore, to choose a luxury watch.

  1. The key "three words" for buying a valuable used watch: Attention should be paid to the general condition of the watch and make sure that the parts that compose it are original, if the piece is certified as Unworn (never worn), the appraised value will be much higher, the presence of Box and Paper (original box and guarantee), increase the value of the model.
  2. There are brands that represent a safe investment: Da Rolex, Patek Philippe to Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantine, famous brands all over the world and particularly attractive for collectors. They guarantee a large "second hand" market, they are brands that have seen a remarkable increase in value in the last 4/5 years.
  3. Reference models: Rolex Daytona, GMT or Submariner in steel are valuable items. These are watches which, even if not produced in a limited edition, have seen their value increase over time.
  4. The golden period to bet on: The most demanded are the watches produced until the end of the years Eighty, as time passes we are seeing – says the expert – an increase in value also for the models 2000s and early XNUMXs.
  5. Fashion: what passes, what returns and what remains: The watch is a personal object, a status symbol. In the field of fashion there is a return of jewel models for women. For example, on June 14, a very special Daytona in pink gold with a “Chocolate” dial will go up for auction with an auction starting price of 14 euros (market value up to 40 euros). “Cartier's feminine designs never go out of style". For the men instead we recommend the timeless technical and sports watches, such as chronographs, GMTs and Submariners.
