Assopopolari: less charges on local banks

Assopopolari appreciates the intention of the new American administration to differentiate the burdens of financial regulation by easing those concerning local banks

“The news that comes from overseas, with the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States, is filling the front pages of newspapers around the world, but one of his announcements does not seem to have been given the right prominence so far if not in some specialized publications”. These are the words of the Secretary General of the National Association of Popular Banks, Giuseppe De Lucia Lumeno, commenting on what was reported in an article in the Financial Times group's magazine “The Banker”.

Donald Trump's idea is to reduce the burden of Supervision and the charges associated with resolution plans for smaller banks and keep the current rules in force, introduced with the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010, but only for banks that may pose systemic risk. A change which, by favoring the traditional lending activity of smaller banks, can encourage households and SMEs and give further impetus to the US economy.

For Giuseppe De Lucia Lumeno “The idea of introducing a principle of gradualness in regulation can only be greeted positively with the hope that even in Europe it will be possible to take more decisive steps in this direction. That it is necessary to take into account how the banking system is not a single block without distinctions but is instead made up of credit entities that are profoundly different from each other, is also demonstrated by the opinion expressed last month by Andreas Dombret, member of the Board of the Bundesbank, supporter of a different regulation for local banks. The hope is that thanks to the multiplication of these positions, this approach can be implemented as soon as possible in Europe and in our country”.
