Assolombarda: Lombardy is the center of the life sciences chain in Italy

The results of the research "The relevance of the Life Sciences Supply Chain in Lombardy and in Italy" conducted by Assolombarda were presented today as part of the Milan Life Sciences Forum 2022. The document reaffirms the importance of the sector in this historic moment and certifies the importance of Lombardy on the national and international scene.

Assolombarda: Lombardy is the center of the life sciences chain in Italy

This morning the investigation was presented, conducted by Assolombarda Study Centerregarding the situation of the Life Sciences in Italy. The document called "The relevance of the Life Sciences Supply Chain in Lombardy and in Italy" shows how the Lombard life science supply chain withstood the pandemic crisis and confirmed its leadership in the Italian panorama.
The Lombardy sector generates 74,5 billion euros, equal to 30% of the production value in Italy.

Growth of the life sciences sector

Despite the critical issues highlighted by Covid-19 and the crises related to global supply and production chains, the life sciences sector has not arrested its growth in Lombardia and throughout the national territory.

In 2021, the value of production relating to the supply chain reached 250 billion euros, up by 6,9% compared to 2020 and by 10,1% compared to 2019. Its added value exceeded 105 billion (+3,4 .2020% compared to 10,6). Overall, the value of the supply chain in Italy corresponds to XNUMX% of GDP.

In Lombardia, in particular, the production value of the supply chain exceeded 74,5 billion euros (+5,4% compared to 2020); the added value, on the other hand, stands at almost 27 billion (+3,5% in 2020) and represents around 13% of the regional GDP, with a total direct and induced value added of over 51,5 billion euros.
The region Lombardia it proves to be the driving force of the sector in Italy: 20% of the employees work in an area where one sixth of the Italian population resides; moreover, 26% of the added value and 30% of the production value of the Italian supply chain is recorded. Evidence is also shown by the role of industry which, alone, activates 44% of the production value (32,6 billion euros) and 36% of the added value (9,7 billion euros) of the entire Life chain sciences.

Even at the European level, Lombardy stands out in the pharmaceutical sector together with Cataluña, Baden-Württemberg and Île de France. Lombardy exports amount to 7,7 billion euros, with a growth of +80% in the last ten years.

Assolombarda: Life sciences supply chain essential for the health and development of the territory

“The pandemic has demonstrated the centrality of Health and Research for the economic system and society as a whole. Today, raw material and energy challenges create unprecedented stress that puts even many competitive companies in difficulty. Public-private collaboration is central, but the contraction in health care spending from 7,1% of GDP in 2022 to 6,1% in 2025 is worrying. PNRR today represents a development opportunity for the ecosystem, but it cannot be the only tool for responding to strategic objectives to which companies and institutions must aspire in a joint process. We need a strategic and investment plan for the Life Sciences, which sees health spending as an investment for the health of the citizen and of our country” he declared Sergio Dompé, vice president of Assolombarda with proxy to Life Sciences.
