Insurance companies, the results of the IVASS survey signal a drop in the costs of motor policies

The second quarterly report published by the Insurance Supervisory Institute takes stock of the situation of high prices in the Motor TPL sector on 1 July 2013. The survey - carried out on 21 Italian provinces by analyzing 11 standard types of drivers - reports a decline in the cost of motor insurance policies in the last 12 months (-4,2%) while prices to insure two-wheelers rise again (+3,5%). The situation remains critical and unresolved at crucial points. In fact, the disparity in access to insurance services between Northern and Southern Italy continues and worsens, with rates quadrupling from Bolzano to Naples for the same type of insured. Adding to the consumer dissatisfaction were the consequences of the sentence of the European Court of Justice of last March 1st, which expressed itself in favor of a equal treatment between the sexes in the context of motor policies. Leveling upwards, the sentence has in fact translated into a surge in prices for young insured girls (+8,9% in the last 12 months for an eighteen-year-old driving a 1300 cc petrol class B/M of CU 14 ) while the rates for male counterparts decreased in the same period (-9,5% for the same engine size and class), while remaining among the highest in Europe. The hopelessly disadvantageous comparison with European tariffs is another matter to be resolved.

Il slight decrease in insurance costs calculated on the total, it can still be considered a positive sign. We hope for a more marked and above all homogeneous trend towards improvement, and that the measures taken on the subject will prove effective, including greater control over fraud, which certainly contributes to increases and territorial imbalances. In this regard it is recalled the possibility of having insurance discounts if you agree to equip your vehicle with a black box. An important signal to protect consumers comes from the protocol recently signed by IVASS and AGCM, the Competition and Market Authority. The two bodies have in fact committed themselves to a regular exchange of data, information and methods, to a concrete cooperation for the control of the tariffs imposed by the companies, also through joint inspections in collaboration with the Guardia di Finanza.
