The data contained in the IVASS Statistical Bulletin for the period 2012-2017 testify to strong growth in the health sector dedicated to Health - Accident and health classes up - fires down - Generali and Unipol are contending for market leadership

Insurance: the health sector is growing, the health branch is booming

Keep growing the health insurance sector which in 2017 (latest data available) collected premiums of 5,7 billion euro, a figure which in percentage terms is worth 17,5 per cent of non-life premiums collected.

These are the most relevant data contained in the IVASS Statistical Bulletin on the insurance business in the health sector and in the fire and general liability sectors from 2012 to 2017.

Going into details, in 2017 the accident branch recorded growth of 2,6% on 2016, with a profit for the twentieth consecutive year (0,7 billion euro in 2017). The average price paid for insurance coverage was 69 euros, unchanged compared to 2016.

The increase recorded since disease branch which, also in 2017, grew by 9,4% compared to the previous year, achieving profit for the seventh consecutive year. At this juncture, the average price for insurance coverage amounts to 176 euros, while a significant figure emerges as regards premium income per group. If in 2012 it was Generali that held the highest market share with 32,2% of the total, since 2016 "in first place in the standings" we find Unipol with 25% compared to 23,5% of the Leone group. In 2017 the distance between the two companies widens: Unipol's market share is 24,6%., 22,4% that of Generali.

And the others? Third place for Rbm Salute, with a market share of 16,7%, fourth for Allianz with 10,2%. Reale Mutua, on the other hand, reaches fifth position with 5,2%.

Moving on to insurance fires and natural elements, insurance premiums two years ago amounted to 2,4 billion, marking a loss of 61 million over the previous year, after six consecutive years of profits. The average price for insurance coverage is around 152 euros. As regards the individual companies, Generali and Unipol dominate the market, with a share (for both) of 22,9%. Allianz and Reale Mutua follow, respectively at 10,5% and 10%. Then Cattolica (5,2%), Itas Assicurazioni and Axa Italia with 4,6%

Il responsibility branch general civil (9% of non-life premium income) collects 2,9 billion euros in premiums and has recorded a profit for 4 consecutive years (0,9 billion euros in 2017). The average price for activated insurance coverage is 177 Euros, down from around 200 Euros in 2012.
