Pd Assembly, Zingaretti secretary: "Change everything"

The era of begins Nicola Zingaretti at the head of the Democratic Party, with former premier Paolo Gentiloni as president and Luigi Zanda as treasury. "We need a new Democratic Party, everything must change starting with the statute to prevent the country from being saved," said the governor of Lazio, from the stage of the Democratic Party Assembly meeting at the Ergife hotel in Rome, where he was officially proclaimed secretary after the clear victory in the primaries of 3 March last. An Assembly which among other things was well attended, compared to recent years, with over 2.000 people including delegates and guests.

Paolo Gentiloni instead he was elected president of the party with 86 abstentions and none against. A candidacy, that of the former premier, on which there was also convergence of the Renzians, as announced before the start of work by Mary Helen Woods (who warmly greeted the new secretary upon his arrival) and from the area headed by Guerini and Lotti. “The goal is to get back to winning ways,” said Gentiloni, thanking those present for appointing him. And appoint vice presidents Anna Ascani Deborah Serracchiani. Louis Zanda instead he was elected treasurer with 83 abstentions. Renzi was not present at Ergife, but sent his best wishes to the new secretary via Facebook: “Today Nicola Zingaretti begins his work as National Secretary of the Democratic Party. A hug to him and to all the team that will work with him. Italy expects a response from the Democratic Party to the collapse of Salvini and Di Maio, no more internal controversies. Full speed ahead! Good job, Nicole."

“We have to change everything, I think about a new statute to be written together. I believe in an open and pluralist party, open to civic spirit and volunteering, enough with the exasperated currentism that has left out too many people. We need a strong Democratic Party but also a network of intermediate bodies. We must build a broader and more inclusive democratic field, without sectarianism. Different forces may also be part of it, civic forces but also of a liberal orientation, even nobly conservative who are equally distant from Salvini ”, Zingaretti said in his speech.

There are four pillars of Zingaretti's new Democratic Party: “First of all the material infrastructures: we need a great plan for a safer Italy but also more respectful of the environment. Because only with a green turn can we go back to producing wealth. The ecological conversion of the economy is the future. Italy must contribute to the goal of zero emissions in Europe”. The second pillar is the intangible infrastructure, the Internet: "We need a great plan to relaunch innovation and knowledge and overcome the digital divide". Third is the knowledge infrastructure: "Investing in school and public education as the cornerstone of a broad operation of cultural growth". Finally, fourth is welfare and health care: "We do not believe in the monetization of welfare, we will fight for public health by promoting the 10 quota, i.e. an increase of 10 billion to increase the levels of assistance and hire 100 new operators in the Italian public health . The real priority of this era is work, throughout the country but above all in the South".
