Article 18, Renzi: "I'm not backing down on the labor reform"

The labor reform "can no longer be postponed: on Monday I present my ideas, there will be an internal debate, but then we decide and we move forward together, as happens in all democratic parties". The premier said yesterday, Matteo Renzi, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

“It is unthinkable that we stop or that I pull back – added the Prime Minister -. The first thing is to change the labor market in Italy, which is focused on the past. The people of the left, leaders of my political side and not of the right, think that the Workers' Statute must be maintained at all costs and that this is the only way to be men of the left. Changing means avoiding the possibility of a judge deciding whether or not a person can change jobs.

The leader of the CGIL then turned to the premier, Susanna Camusso, threatening a general strike "if Renzi does not negotiate" with the union. “I understand that there is a season in which article 18 cannot apply – added Camusso, opening up to the proposals of the left Pd -, but it is necessary” that it be transitory.

On the other side there is Sergio Marchionne: according to the managing director of Fiat and Chrysler, article 18 "is creating social unease and inequalities: this is not justice".

Meanwhile, the reform, described as "crucial" by Treasury Minister Pier Carlo Padoan, is about to begin its journey at the Senatewhere they were presented 689 amendments. Most came from Sel (353) and M5s (158). Fi and Lega both presented 48 amendment proposals. In the majority, no proposal came from the Ncd, 31 from the Democratic Party and 9 from the SC.
