Art and breast cancer, an exhibition to extend the culture of prevention

Il breast cancer it is the most common oncological disease among women worldwide; the most recent studies confirm that the number of diagnosed cases is increasing, at all latitudes. In Italy, for example, they get sick of breast cancer more than 50 women each year.

That's why the'Praevenus Association, an association born in 2019 with the aim of extending the culture of prevention and supporting all those women who live or have already had the experience of breast cancer, has decided to organize a project that combines art and prevention.

From the 17 to the 30 June (with inauguration by invitation Wednesday 16) the Humanitarian Society of Milan (via Francesco Daverio 7) will host the exhibition Because we are like logs in the snow, curated by Luca Zuccala and Andrea Tinterri, with the patronage of the Municipality of Milan, which will present the works of twenty-one female artists – Luisa Badino, Irene Balia, Elisa Bertaglia, Chiara Calore, Anna Capolupo, Linda Carrara, Sabrina Casadei, Barbara De Vivi, Chiara Enzo, Alice Faloretti, Beatrice Gelmetti, Silvia Giordani, Beatrice Meoni, Elisa Muliere, Marta Naturale, Greta Pllana, Nazzarena Poli Maramotti, Vera Portatadino, Adelisa Selimbasic, Chiara Sorgato, Sophie Westerlind – which return a broad panorama of contemporary Italian painting; often different languages capable of composing an exhaustive picture of the current national pictorial research.

"We have lived sixteen months suspended by the pandemic, now that the worst is over I believe it is essential to bring attention back to the issues of cancer prevention in general and specifically to the prevention of breast cancer", says Mario Rampa – breast specialist and President of the Praevenus ETS Association.

“Every year this disease affects over 54000 women and just under 900 men in our country Rampa continues -. Early diagnosis is still today the most powerful weapon we have, and to make early diagnosis we need good doctors and above all a strong will of our women to undertake a prevention path. Strong will comes from knowledge and culture, so I thought of speaking to our girls, to the women of the future through this initiative which provides for an auction of the exhibited works whose proceeds will be used to make a short film which, through a simple and immediate language can spread the culture of self-care and prevention".

During the Saturday 19 and 26 JuneDr. Mario Rampa will "transfer" his practice in the cloisters of via Francesco Daverio 7 to offer free information and preventive breast visits to the public.

(reservation required subject to availability by email prevention@umanitaria.it)

Throughout the course of the exhibition it will be possible to submit written offers for the works on display. Wednesday June 30 the auction of the exhibited works is scheduled for the Humanitarian Society, part of the proceeds of which will be destined to production of the short film "Pink Phoenix" aimed at high school and university students on the topic of prevention.

Because we are like logs in the snow is the incipit of a short story by Franz Kafka:

"Because we are like logs in the snow. Apparently they sit flat on it, and with a little shake you should be able to push them aside. No, you can't, because they are tied solidly to the ground. But look, even this is only an appearance."

A title that interprets the exhibition project, or rather a narration that insists on the vulnerability of the human being, on his intrinsic fragility. But the story is only the starting point, an observation to react to by triggering virtuous mechanisms of individual and collective protection. For this reason, the artists involved were advised to work on the dimension of the refuge, as a form of protection and security. A broad theme, open to biographical, news, literary, philosophical solicitations. The refuge is also the space in which to think about change, about an ongoing revolution, about an impulse, about an action. The refuge is a space of possibilities, of thought.

THEPraevenus Association was born in March 2019 to spread the culture of prevention and support all those women who live or have already had the experience of breast cancer.

Praevenus onlus intends with this project:

  • Making a docu-film in order to raise awareness of the topic of breast cancer, the importance of prevention and the need for training volunteering.
  • Design, activate and coordinate a toll-free number to answer questions and problems and to provide immediate and direct assistance.
  • Promote information activities on breast cancer prevention in institutional and non-institutional environments.
  • To sensitize the institutions on the topic of prevention, fight and treatment of breast cancer.
  • Raise funds that allow the Association to expand its mission through local actions.
